Who's Hiding? by Satoru Onishi is a multi- award winning book for babies and toddlers. Sharp-eyed youngsters will have fun with this search-and-find picture book. Eighteen simply drawn, brightly colored animals are laid out in the same order on each spread. A rear view is laid out on the endpapers. The first spread shows the creatures and their names and asks, Who is hiding? The next spread shows all of them except for the reindeer who is invisible except for his antlers. Half of an Elephant by Gusti is an award winning book published by Kane Miller. This 40 page book is perfect for children between the ages of 5 years old and 9 years old that has earned the Parenting Magazine Best Books of the Year. This is an interesting story for children to read. The illustrations are unique.

Story of Half of an Elephant

One night, all of a sudden, the world split in two. Faced with this unexpected event - and with half of his considerable body missing - an elephant began a journey to find his missing half. Since there was only half of him, he was referred to as 'half of an elephant'. Along the way, he discovered the many different ways there are of rebuilding and reinventing oneself. He also met other animals that also lost their halves. Soon the half elephant realized that every animal had the same problem as him. The front half of the elephant tried to join with other animals but it did not really work. Eventually, the front half of the elephant gave up and decided that it was not so bad being by himself.

Meanwhile, the rear half of the elephant was also having a problem. It was hard for him to join with the front half of other animals. He then arrived at the same conclusion.

Eventually, the world rejoins and the halves of the elephant find each other but they are fine being on their own now.

At once quietly poetic and (not-so-quietly) humorous, Half of an Elephant is an adventure of a lifetime, not just for our hero, but for every reader who has ever struggled to find himself.

This book with a strange title by Colin Thompson has attracted lots of kids all over the world to read it. This book is called The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness and it has earned many awards. The book measures 10.25 x 9.25 inches, has 32 pages and it is an excellent read for children between ages 5 and 9 years old. This is a great real life story book for children. The story is a bit sad at first, but it is a also a story of hope and friendship. All told, this is a wonderful heartwarming story to read to your children with a very happy ending.

It's Christmas by Tina Burke is a very cute book published by Kane Miller for children of all ages preparing for Christmas. It is a hardback book with 32 pages and many parents say that it is by far the perfect holiday book for excited kids! This book is so adorable. The illustrations are so cute. There are so many pictures of happy boys and girls and Santa too. It is so loved by kids and parents that it earned the Mom's Choice Award.

Simple text accompanies the sweetest illustrations of children preparing for Christmas which makes this book a perfect read for children between ages 4 years and 8 years old. There is not much to read but the author does an excellent job of including all the traditional activities that we typically associate with this time of the year through simple, short sentences and extremely sweet illustrations. Baking cookies? Check. Visiting Santa? Check. Decorating the tree, wrapping gifts, hanging stockings and that final long wait on Christmas Eve are all depicted here with adorable drawings. This is one of the happiest books to read for kids around Christmas time.

If you want to start learning some Japanese, then this is a great book. This Usborne First Thousand Words in Japanese book earned the 1999 Dr. Toy's Best Classic Toys Award. These delightful picture-word book by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright makes it easy for young readers to learn new words. This 64-page book is Internet linked so you can go online and listen to all the words on the Usborne Quicklinks Web site. That means, on each page of this First Thousand Words in Japanese, you will see:

the picture/ illustration of the word,
how it is written in Japanese
how it is pronounced in Japanese, and
listen to how it is said or pronounced by a Japanese person

The book measures 9 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches and is perfect for children between ages 3 and 12 years old. There are lots of opportunities for conversation practice.

Learning Japanese with the Usborne Book of First Thousand Words in Japanese

This book makes learning Japanese fun and easy. The first few pages explains how words in this First Thousand Words in Japanese book are written in simple Japanese signs called kana. Then it gives you alt he kana signs. Japanese has two sets of kana signs: Hiragana signs and Katakana signs. Hiragana is used for traditional sounds of Japanese and Katakana is used for words that Japanese has borrowed from other languages. The book also gives pronunciation tips as well as explain how to say and read Japanese words. Traditionally, Japanese is written from right to left and top to bottom. The book briefly explains another, more complicated type of Japanese writing called Kanji which is very similar to Chinese writing.

This book has English translation for each word at the end of the book. The pictures and illustrations for each word should be enough to explain what each word means clearly. If you need help with translation still, you can flip to the end of the book and find the meaning of the word in English. When learning a language, you may have heard that it is best not to translate so that you are effectively learning as a child would. With this Usborne First Thousand Words in Japanese book, you will be able to do just that - learning how to speak and read Japanese without translating every word. This makes learning Japanese easier and more fun than you might have imagined.
